This course focuses on probability theory needed to understand statistical inference. Within this course, students will undergo an introduction to probability theory, independence and conditional probabilities including Bayes’ Theorem. Following this, several discrete (binomial, hypergeometric, negative binomial, Poisson) and continuous (Normal, exponential, gamma, uniform) probability distributions will be studied including the concept of a distribution function, probability mass and density functions, expected value, variance, and standard deviation. Joint probability and sampling distributions will follow. The course will then examine how to apply the probabilities learned to point estimates, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and regressions. This course will also apply many probabilistic concepts to real world applications to demonstrate how many probabilistic concepts are used in the field. Notes for each topic will be found in the blackboard and github page for this course. Students will also be expected to install R and will be guided on how to use it to address different probability questions.
At the end of the course, students are expected to have a strong grasp on the following:
There will be 3 quizzes, homework, R projects, and a final exam. Homeworks will constitute 10% of the grade. The R projects will constitute 30 percent of the final grade altogether. Additionally, the quizzes will constitute 30 percent of the grade with the lowest quiz score being dropped. The final will account for the remainder.
Although optional, I will provide students with an opportunity on Tuesdays to come to class or establish a forum online where we will learn more in regards to R and how to use it as a tool for probability. I strongly encourage students who wish to learn more about the functions in R and how to do some basic programming tasks to take advantage of this. Labs will be focused on addressing student concerns in R as well as covering some of the foundations of analysis.
By being in this class, you consent to having your name placed in a random number generator which will be used primarily to pick on students if I have a question and no one wishes to participate.
Although not graded, I encourage you to work with study partners to solve problems and create a culture of collaboration. If students choose to work with others, they must submit the original solutions and list all collaborators and sources of information consulted. This class will also have a discussion board where students will be able to communicate with one another to solve problems. In these discussions, please refrain from posting answers to assignments. Rather, appropriate collaboration should clarify what’s being asked, shed light on a topic, or direct others to the relevant material.
As provided by the CUNY guidelines, academic dishonesty is wrong and prohibited throughout CUNY. If caught, students will be referred to the Academic Integrity Officer and penalties may include academic sanctions, failing the course, or expulsion from the university.

This class has both a github and blackboard page where material will be made available to students. In addition to having the lecture notes and slides for the class available for people to see; both github and blackboard can be used by students to ask questions and generate a forum where students can discuss and offer further material.
